The Difference in Sophiticated Humor and Poor Taste

Through the years I received a few letters from individuals who felt one or another of my tie designs was in poor taste. While I acknowledge that some of my designs may teeter on the edge, I maintain that the difference between sophisticated humor and poor taste is a function of “who” and “where”. One of my ties has different men’s heads and each head has a cat there-on.  Some cats are standing, some sitting, some stretching.  This is a tie for a man who has nothing on his mind but pussy.  When I showed the tie to Thomas Watson and told him who the tie targeted, he told me that I had outdone myself. He asked me to deliver 2 dozen “Pussy on the Mind” ties to his office.  When Mr. Watson gave one of these ties as a gift it was an example of sophiticated humor.  The same tie on the counter at Nordstroms or Bloomingdales would be in bad taste.
