Are Your Sleeves Too Long?

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

The most common clothing eyesore that one sees is men with jacket sleeves that are too long. A  few years ago a Russian oil company began opening Lukoil stations in the USA.  When they opened the first station , which was somewhere on Long Island in NY, Vladamir Putin, who was in NYC for a UN meeting, attended the opening.  The newspapers had pictures of the ceremonial “cutting of the tape”. Mr. Putin’s sleeves were down to his fingertips. A few weeks ago many world leaders were in NYC for a round of speeches at the UN. France’s Nicolas Sarkozy was the most photographed. This was because he has the most attractive wife. It certainly wasn’t because he was the best dressed. His sleeves covered his hands. Can it be that they, and others who have their hands covered by their sleeves, are trying to eliminate the need for gloves? Perhaps it is an example of the “more is better” syndrome.  I was taught that sleeves should reach the notch at the joining of the hand and the wrist.  There are acceptable variations- slightly longer or slightly shorter. Personal taste trumps guides that claim to be absolute. My next blog will discuss the proper length of jackets.
